Hello Friends........... Thirteen members from FMCPT rode across the state a couple of weeks ago on the Ohio to Erie Trail. Jerry Rampelt, Executive Director for The Ohio to Erie Trail Fund, escorted the group along the street route in Cincinnati and Columbus which was a great help in some of the tricky spots. Carolyn and Guy Cocchiarale from www.IgotABike.com fame helped guide the group on a modified route in Cleveland to the "tire dip" point in Edgewater Park. Thanks Jerry, Carolyn and Guy for your assistance! Some photos below show parts of the adventure - more will be on the FMCPT Photo Gallery later.

Join us for the Full Moon Ride this Saturday, Sept. 29th at 7:30 p.m. The last two rides have been a blast with recording breaking attendance!

A family oriented nature scavenger hunt will be a fun learning experience for kids of all ages at the new Little Darby State Scenic River Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 6th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. More information is available at the link below.

The Deer Creek Fall Color Ride is planned for Saturday, October 13th. Reduced rates are available until Oct. 6th during pre-registration. This is a budget ride but route maps and limited SAG support will be available.

Hello Friends........... Here are some fall events to consider:

The Full Moon Ride (or should we say Blue Moon Ride!) is on Friday, Aug. 31st at 8 p.m. (The Aug. 1st ride set an attendance record for this event!)

(All FMCPT volunteers are invited to attend the annual appreciation picnic at 6 p.m. at the Prairie Grass Trailhead prior to the Full Moon Ride.)

Join FMCPT in the West Jefferson Ox Roast Parade on Saturday, Sept. 1st - line up at 11 a.m. Just bring your bike and look for bicyclists in the line up. Better yet, bring the kids and grandkids to help distribute candy along the parade route!

For you runners: The Episopacer 50K Race will be on Sept. 22nd starting in Xenia and going to London on the Prairie Grass Trail. FMCPT volunteers will help staff rest stops along the route for the Proctor Recreational Programs and Activities sponsored event.

The Deer Creek Fall Color Ride is Oct. 13th. Sign up now for this budget ride and get the early registration rate. There are two options: a 38-mile route, and a 77-mile route. It will start in London and follow the river valley through some of the prettiest fall foliage areas in central Ohio. Since it is a budget ride, there will be no organized food stops but there are several eateries indicated on the maps.

After the ride on the 13th, stop over to the "Boo" Fest at the Proctor Center. This promises to be a fun Halloween festival for the whole family. The Madison County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring this event for the public, and as a proud member of this organization FMCPT encourages you to support the Chamber.

Hello Friends........... The Full Moon Ride is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 1st at 8 p.m. Beat the heat and get a few evening miles in along the trail.

This is a reminder about the seal coating on Roberts Pass this week. (The contractor plans to seal Maple Street to Springvalley Road (section just east of London) on Wednesday.) All work is to be completed by Friday so it will not conflict with the festival activities.

If you're into baking, join the competition at the London Rib and Jazz Fest - Pie Baking Contest this Friday or the Cupcake Display and Decorating Contest on Saturday. If not, come out on Friday and have some ribs and help eat the pie! Better yet, come out Saturday morning and take in the Rib Tickler Ride, return to the fest for ribs, then enjoy a cupcake! We're here to please.

It's easy to do online registering to get the reduced rate locked in. If printing a registration form and sending in a check is better for you, no problem - just have it post marked by July 28th for the reduced rate. You can always just come to the registration table near Oak and 2nd Streets in London at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 4th and pay the normal $20 entrance fee. You'll enjoy a pretty country ride to Brighton where there will be a food stop. A slightly different route brings you back to London where you can secure your bike at the bike corral and enjoy a delicious meal at the Rib and Jazz Fest. After you walk off those ribs and enjoy the entertainment, there is homemade ice cream and cupcakes to finish off any remaining hunger pangs! Come join the fun!

Madison Press article: McDowell worked tirelessly to better village

07-21-12
Hello Friends........... A friend, nature advocate, and community leader has moved on. Jack McDowell died peacefully with family members on Friday afternoon, July 20, 2012.

Jack has been involved with the work of parks and trails for decades. He was researching and identifying wildflowers and prairie grasses along the Prairie Grass Trail long before the idea of the Ohio to Erie Trail was born. Jack was a key proponent of the trailheads and nature preserves in Madison County. He was an early member of Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails and retained a seat on its Board of Directors until his death.

Those of us who have known and worked with Jack feel the loss of his passing, while at the same time; treasure the joy of our experiences with him. He so willingly shared his abundant knowledge of nature and the physical world with generations of people in the community. He worked hard to preserve native species for everyone to see and experience. Jack touched the hearts of many, and he will be missed.

Hello Friends........... Please note the West Jefferson Ox Roast Bicycle Tour has been cancelled for 2012. For any questions, please contact the West Jefferson Community Association. If you would like to assist in the planning for the 2013 tour, please contact the association as well.

Green arrows with a number "1" are being painted along the bicycle street routes in London. The #1 stands for the Ohio to Erie Trail, and the arrows are intended to make it a little easier for cyclists to find their way across London between the trails on the east and west sides of the city. Large new display maps are being placed at the ends of the trail on each side of London to encourage cyclists to "visit the GAP in the trail" and take advantage of the amenities throughout the city.

As mentioned in earlier news updates, the FMCPT meeting for May will be this Tuesday, May 15th at 7 pm. The location has been moved to the London Coffee Peddler, at 65-B West High Street.

Hello Friends............... As most of you know by now, this Wednesday is the Grand Opening ceremony for the next section of the Ohio to Erie Trail. We hope as many of you as possible can come, and help FMCPT and the Madison County Park District thank Metro Parks for another job well done! (If you have a green FMCPT shirt, please wear it to the ceremony.)

If possible, plan to ride your bike to the ceremony at the canoe access area. The Madison Messenger articles below, and the Metro Parks announcement give detailed instructions about how to get there. If you plan to drive to a trailhead and then ride your bike from there, see the area map as part of the Metro Parks announcement. It shows parking areas along the trail from London to Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park.

If you plan to drive and then walk to the site, there are limited spaces at the canoe access parking lot that may best be used by event speakers, dignitaries, and walking-challenged people. The Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park map on the Metro Parks announcement will show available parking lots and walking trails to the canoe access area.

Hope to see you at the Celebration! Next stop - Galloway!

Hello Friends............... March 21st will mark an important day for the supporters of the trail across Madison County. Since 1999, the founders of FMCPT have been waiting for this day. It's the official day for declaring the Camp Chase Trail opened. But it's also the day when the Ohio to Erie Trail is officially open across the entire span of Madison County. This is a day to celebrate not only the wonderful asset of the paved trail from the edge of Cincinnati to Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, but also the culmination of many years of work through cooperating relationships with our friends at the Ohio to Erie Trail Fund, the Clark County Park District, the Madison County Metropolitan Park District, the City of London, and the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District (and many others) to get the trail through Madison County. Join the Friends of Madison County Park District to thank the many people that made this event possible. Hello Friends............... Thanks to all of you that braved the "first" winter day last Saturday to come to the pancake breakfast!

For those that came and stuck around to the end, received a glow even warmer than the delicious pancakes and coffee. A young boy about 8 years old named Eli remained with his mom waiting for the announcements of the winners of the raffles and silent auction. As is our custom, we looked around for a child to pull the winning number for the raffles. Eli was the only child left waiting for the big announcements, so he was asked to do the honors. His first task was to select the winner of the refurbished child size bike. He shuffled his hand through the deep raffle ticket jar and pulled out a ticket. His jaw suddenly dropped as he looked up and shouted in amazement: "It's me!" The officials quickly checked the ticket showing his name and were delighted to give their confirmation. Eli's mom said later that he hasn't stopped talking about his "new" bike. We hope we found a new trail rider.

Thanks again to all of you that brought a little warmth on a cold winter day.
Eli draws his own raffle ticket and wins the refurbished child size bike.
